This "Little Jewel" is a nice radio made of a painted bakelite body with brass down the center, front and back. It has a brass and plastic handle. There is a "W" on a jewell located at the front top that lights up when turned on. It is in great working condition and has only a few paint chips. First models have tube 35A5 instead of 35L6GT, which can not replace each other due to diferences in socket.

Take a look / Dê uma olhada

I had a hard time to find a short on B+.
Days and nights of testing components and parts. To my surprise, the problem was a shorted NEW electrolytic capacitor. Since it tested OK with the power off, I never suspected this could be the problem.

Finalmente consegui achar a onde estava a encrenca.

I just finish a 2-week restoration of 2 Philips BR397A. One from Juvenal and the other from my own collection. Juvenal's set was electricaly in a very good shape but, with a very bad looking and broken cabinet. On the other hand, mine was electricaly in a bad shape and a nice looking cabinet.

To get them back to live, I got a third set to supply parts. Cabinet and knobs went to Juvenal's. Tone control, xfmr, rect socket, a couple of resistors, and a AZ1 tube went to mine.

I replaced electrolytics, some film caps, and power cord. After a very good cleaning, a new cabinet, and knobs, Juvenal's was looking great and playing with a very rich sound.

Mine gave me some headache. In the same way,I replaced electrolytics, some film caps, tone parts, and a couple of resistors. To my surprise, the xfrmer was 5V rect rather than 4V required by AZ1. Besides, the plate voltage was not enough to run an AZ1. Well, I finished the work with a pair of diodes to do the rectification job. The set works great, but I'll keep searching for an original or even compatible xfrmer.

---------

Restoring Philips 510A and 525A

I've been working on two Philips models with similar chassis. Model 510A belongs to me and model 525A to a fellow Juvenal. It's been a challenge since both have antenna coil in bad condition. They are working great now that I solved the coil problem with a simple hot gun to melt a little bit the wax and some resoldering. It worked, the clean sound came out great. Philips models 510A, 522A, 523A, 524A e 525A have this same coil, which has 4 sections: 90 and 30 ohms interconnected; and 4,5 and 40 ohms interconnected.

Philips 510A, 1935, Netherlands

Philips 525A, 1935, Netherlands
